A spotting scope moves things. It pulls things tiny with distance right into your hand. But the "Big Eye" is cumbersome too. On a hunt, you must weigh the benefits of detailed looks at distance against the various costs of making them.

“Good grief! Drop tines!” My pal had pushed me aside for a peek. “What a deer!”

It was indeed. As it made its way across slope, through thin aspens, it didn’t get smaller. We eased down our side of the canyon to gain yards. The buck slipped onto a trail angling across our front. In the shadow cast by a Douglas fir, I set up the tripod again.

“Two bucks now.” Both were extraordinary animals. We watched them slide, ghost-like, toward the canyon’s head. Then a third animal emerged. By the time they’d come even with us, four more bucks had joined the trio. At 320, maybe 350 yards, Jim had the shot. But there was no place to steady the Sako.
